Proceeds From the Event
When you join in on the delicious fun at the BBQ & Chili Cookoff, you will be helping Asbury and local communities in a big way. Proceeds from the event will help Asbury launch a brand-new congregational care program called Anchor Community Respite Ministry, benefiting caregivers and loved ones dealing with memory-loss issues like dementia and Alzheimer’s.
The program’s name was inspired by Hebrews 6:19: We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul. “We want this program to be an anchor for caregivers and their loved ones everywhere, offering hope, support and stability,” says Maggie Dunaway, Director of Congregational Care.
“This program will not only provide a much-needed break for caregivers, but also community and enrichment for the participants of the program suffering from memory loss,” said Director of Congregational Care, Maggie Dunaway.
Here’s how the program works:
Twice a week, every week, caregivers can bring their loved their loved ones to Asbury where they can stay for four hours a day. During this time, caregivers will have the chance to run errands or take a much-needed break, while their loved ones are being safely cared for, playing games, participating in group activities and enjoying a hot meal.
When learning about the Anchor Community Respite Ministry, one thing in particular struck me as wonderful—the program is available to everyone.
“You do not have to be a member of Asbury to participate,” said Dunaway. “Anyone in Shelby County, Jefferson County and surrounding communities can sign up.”
The cost is $40 per day. If you compare this to the cost of local daycare for children, this is an incredibly low price. Knowing your loved one is being safely cared for, though, is priceless.
The Anchor Community Respite Ministry is in keeping with Asbury’s mission of helping to serve neighbors both near and far. Asbury runs its very own food pantry and various assistance programs, as well as tithes 10% of its annual giving to many local and international mission/nonprofit organizations. Learn more.
