Since it has been in the news about its imminent closure, did you know the 24 hour Western Supermarket- Highland Avenue store on Birmingham’s Southside never closed during the great Blizzard of 1993?

Accumulation of 20 inches of snow? No problem!

Return 26 years later, beginning at Noon yesterday, school systems and local municipalities  throughout Birmingham metro and North Central Alabama began to announce Tuesday closures. By the mid-afternoon, it was like playing dominoes.  Everyone started reporting… we are closing Tuesday!

In total, according to NBC 13’s website there will be  145 closings, and looking at their list, I think they gave up counting.

All this because of a Tuesday morning forecast expecting 1-4 inches of snow by the morning commute. I can already hear the ghosts of Western Supermarket employees past chuckling in the background.

Who will be open tomorrow?

At Bham Now, we thought a  school and government closing story today would be pretty much pointless… right?  So, we thought, how about a story on who is open today during  Snow Day 2019?  We did a little digging and found a few brave souls.

Ok, the Air Traffic Controllers and TSA agents can’t catch a break.  They work without pay for 35 days because of the government shutdown, and now they have got to report to duty on Snow Day 2019. How cruel.

As of 3:00AM, Tuesday morning the airport is open for business. Here is their Twitter announcement.

Birmingham’s overnight warming station at Boutwell Auditorium will be open all day on Tuesday thanks to Mayor Woodfin and the forward thinking people at the city. Here is Facebook post by the city of Birmingham’s Don Lupo about the opening.  By the way – kudos to Lupo and all his fellow city employees and the volunteer restaurants at Heart to Table for taking care of ALL our fellow citizens. They truly are the city’s guardian angels.

CVS Pharmacy 24 Hour Stores

If you need to fill a prescription, as of 3:00AM, the CVS Pharmacy on Inverness Plaza off Highway 280 will be open according to the staffer we talked to.  At the time of our call, the staffer confirmed that they had not been given any indication that they were going to close. We were unable to reach the Greensprings location.

Here is the local CVS Pharmacy website.

Additional places?

Besides, hospitals and emergency operations, who else is open today?

Bham Now readers, please help us get the word out.  Provide us places in the comment section on our social media.  Thank you in advance, and be safe out there Birmingham.
