Birmingham named one of the best cities for jobs in 2018

Birmingham ranked 13th out of 25 on Glassdoor’s list of “Best Cities for Jobs in 2018.” We certainly agree! New jobs are flooding the Birmingham market day by day, making Birmingham a top place to work and live.

So, what kind of facts and figures does Glassdoor pull from to find these rankings?
Glassdoor is a website where both employees and employers can post and share about their respective job experiences. Those looking for jobs will often log onto Glassdoor to get “real world” information about the job they are interested in. For example, an employer can leave a comment detailing how long they have worked at a certain job and why they love it, or they can detail reasons not to work there. Employers can link job listings on the site as well. Glassdoor is one of the top resources for facts and figures regarding salaries at certain jobs, average salaries per area and more.
This database, coupled with the information that employees willingly share regarding business in the area or specific job, allows Glassdoor to pull from a large pool of data. From this data, they are able to make lists like “Top Cities for Jobs” or “Highest Paying Jobs” or “Oddball Interview Questions.”
Top Cities For Jobs
Birmingham came in right in the middle of the list of 25 cities at number 13. Pittsburgh and St. Louis took spots 1 and 2 while Richmond and Charlotte rounded out the list at 24 and 25.
So, what do they use to measure that, anyway?
The study take 5 things into account when ranking a city:
- Glassdoor City Score (out of 5): 4.1
- Job Openings: 24,864
- Median Base Salary: $42,000
- Job Satisfaction Rating (out of 5): 3.4
- Median Home Value: $139,100
The study also lists hot jobs in each city. Birmingham’s are as follows:
- Registered Nurse
- Operations Manager
- Truck Driver
