Funds are used to provide families a place to stay

The 73 families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham each night have traveled hours from home to get the best medical care for their child. Funds raised through Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama’s Pop Tab Recycling Program help ensure the charity can provide these families a comfortable place to stay within a supportive community of volunteers and other families facing similar situations.

Currently, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama raises an average of $15,000 a year from recycling pop tabs—and it’s all thanks to people like you and others in the community who band together to help.

This year, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama hopes to reach their goal of $20,000, and they need your help to make it happen. Here are some tips and tricks to help you collect the most!

Who Can Participate in the Pop Tabs Program?

Anyone can collect pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House! It’s so easy to start: the next time you enjoy a soda in a can or open some canned food with a tab, pull it off and save it! It’s even more fun and rewarding when you do it with friends, your church small groups and even your coworkers!

“Working in the House allows me to come in contact with so many individuals and groups that are making an impact on our families through recycling a tiny pop tab,” said Volunteer Coordinator Alice Taylor. “It is incredible to see the ripple effect it has on communities that want to get involved. That’s what makes it so unique—anyone can do it!”

Schools can take the collection one step further by entering the Pop Tab Pandemonium contest. This competition lasts all school year and schools are serious about collecting the most pop tabs and winning the Pop Tab Pandemonium Trophy!

Pop Tab Collection Tips

As you begin the process of collecting pop tabs, you’ll see their number quickly escalate. Pop tabs are best collected in Ziploc bags, paper bags or boxes and bins.

How To Drop Off Your Tabs

When the time comes to drop off your collection of tabs, there are three options:

1. Visit The Ronald McDonald House

Pop Tabs can be dropped off directly at the Ronald McDonald House at any time at the front desk or in the large Pop Tab House located in the driveway off 17th Street South. (If you’d like to schedule a tour of the Ronald McDonald House when you drop off your tabs, click here.)

2. Mail Them

Can’t make it to the Ronald McDonald House? No problem! You can also mail your pop tabs to 1700 4th Ave S., Birmingham, AL 35233.

3. Head To A Pop Tab Party

Pop Tab Parties are traditionally held across the state of Alabama at select McDonald’s restaurants. Pop Tab Parties are a convenient way to drop off pop tabs for anyone who isn’t able to drop off at the Ronald McDonald House itself. They also serve as official weigh-ins for schools participating in Pop Tab Pandemonium.

“Hosting Pop Tab Parties was a highlight of 2018 for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama,” Taylor said. “Seeing and hearing the stories of teachers and students who persistently collected pop tabs throughout the year was so encouraging for this program. What these students are learning now lays the groundwork for the difference they will make as adults in their communities.”

The dates and locations of the 2019 Pop Tab Parties will be announced in January.
