Vital information on I- 59/20 Memorial Day weekend road closures and blocked downtown Birmingham streets

Are you traveling through downtown Birmingham on I-59/20 in the late evenings and early mornings from Thursday until Memorial Day weekend? How about visiting downtown? Have you planned on certain streets being blocked because they are filming the Aaron Eckhart movie “Live.”
Be ready Birmingham for some delays and detours this weekend.
Here is the 411.
The latest on I-59/20 Road Closures
On the Thursday night, May 24th, I-59/20 will be closed going in both directions through downtown Birmingham.
According to ALDOT:
- I-59/20 Southbound will be closed at mile marker 124 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. to set bridge girders.
- I-59/20 Northbound will be closed at mile marker 125 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. to also set bridge girders. ALDOT will be setting up detours.
Memorial Day weekend
The closures will continue on Friday and Saturday, May 25-26, I-59/20 for travelers moving Northbound. Once again, the interstate will be closed at mile marker 124 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Along with the closures, ALDOT has asked motorists to be extra careful traveling through downtown this weekend to keep the workers safe. A reduced speed limit of 45 mph is in effect throughout the work zone and to use extreme caution in this area.
Downtown Birmingham Street Closures
The filming of the action movie “Live” continues to change traveling plans for local Magic City commuters. For today, Thursday, May 24th, expect a portion of 1st Avenue North to be closed between 22nd and 24th streets.

ALL DAY: Complete Closure of 3rd Ave alley between 20th St. N and Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd.
6:30 am – 10:30 am: Complete Closure of 1st Ave N. from 22nd St. N to 24th St. N.
10:30 am – 3:00 pm: Intermittent Closures on 4th Ave N. and Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd.
