An estimated ten thousand women, men and children gathered at Kelly Ingram Park this afternoon for the Women’s March on Washington, Birmingham Sister March.  Dalia Abrams served as lead organizer for the event, while Shante and Tori Wolfe-Sisson, Spencer Bowley and Jennifer Freehling were heavily involved in planning.   More photos/video below.

The enthusiastic crowd, many holding handmade signs, listened to presentations from representatives of the NAACP, HICA, Coalition for Immigrant Justice, GASP, Council on American-Islamic Relations and Alabama State Representative, Patricia Todd.   MC Marie King remarked on the size of the crowd being unusually large for such a rally.

Musician Ashley Sanke and the Huntsville Feminist Chorus entertained the crowd, then led them in a march song, “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round” as they spilled out of the park and onto the route along 5th and 6th Avenues N.

Upon returning to the park, many marchers stayed to visit, take photos, and sign up with several community and religious organizations that had tents at the event.  Twenty volunteer course marshals gave information, led chants and gave assistance as needed.
