Known for its customer service and kindness, Richardson, who started working at Bernard’s as a 16 year-old in 1974, said the store’s big-heartedness is the secret to their success.

“Bernard told me, ‘Do your best to treat everyone nice and kind, and all the rest will take care of itself. Treat everybody the best you possibly can,’”

And according to Jasper Mayor Josh Gates, Bernard’s infectious spirit is what makes Jasper’s historic downtown a special place worthy to be named the best retailer in the state of Alabama.

“Bernard’s embodies the character of downtown Jasper and sets a standard for excellence that extends well beyond its doors. What distinguishes the business is the experience Rusty Richardson creates through a genuine welcome, lasting relationships, and customer service that, in my opinion, is unparalleled.

Rusty and his family have built a legacy that means a great deal to our entire city, and this recognition from the Alabama Retail Association is well deserved.”
