Position Summary:

The Community Schools Assistant Director works with school staff, community partners, and United Way program staff to plan, develop, implement, and sustain a Community Schools approach to providing programs and services to students, families, and community members.  The Community Schools Assistant Director works with central-office and individual school staff, UWCA program staff, and community partners to enhance social services and academic supports for students within Birmingham City Schools.  The Assistant Director helps to establish family and community engagement strategies, promotes access to key community resources, and helps support the growth and financial sustainability of Community Schools within the City of Birmingham.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with school-based staff to create local Leadership Teams comprised of school staff, families, students, and community-based organizations.
  • Supports school and community leaders to regularly convene a local Advisory Committee to provide guidance, direction and accountability for place-based partnerships.
  • Assists with recruiting new partners and expanding established programs for students and families.
  • Supports student achievement through promoting in-school and out-of-school programs and services.
  • Engages and supports parents and families through ongoing educational and skill-building opportunities for community members.
  • Serves on school and district-level teams focused on supporting students and families.
  • Supports annual landscape analysis within individual schools and across the school district to identify existing programs and service gaps for students and families.
  • Works with school and community partners to ensure programs and services are integrated and aligned with the mission and goals of the school.
  • Serves as a liaison between community organizations, school administration, and United Way staff.
  • Facilitates the development and implementation of annual Action Plans within each school location to incorporate results from community engagement in student and family services.
  • Communicates programming and services to students, families, and community members.
  • Assists with collecting and organizing data for evaluation and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge of education and/or youth development systems and planning processes.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to assess needs, troubleshoot problems, develop solutions, and manage expectations.
  • Ability to coordinate, balance and manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Familiar with a trauma informed perspective in planning and implementing student and family services.
  • Strong professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Successful experience in group facilitation, volunteer management and community problem solving.
  • Willingness to continually grow and develop knowledge of local organizations and potential partnerships.
  • Eagerness to learn about and grow community knowledge of United Way and partner agencies.
  • Ability to organize and supervise collaborative efforts involving multiple organizations and partners.
  • Ability to motivate self and others.
  • Must be able to demonstrate competency in word processing and Power Point applications, and a working knowledge of excel and database management.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree required, with focus in Education or Social Services preferred.

Experience:

  • Experience providing program management within education, health or social service agency preferred.
  • Background in community planning and organizing, volunteer management or project management preferred.

Required:

Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of automobile insurance.  Must pass a background check.

Working Conditions:

Normal office work environment, with frequent visits to Birmingham City School locations.  Some travel and occasional overtime required.  Schedule flexibility is required for late afternoon, evening and weekend events.
