Description

These positions will provide exposure to all aspects of golf and sports communications, including:

  • Photography
  • Videography
  • Writing
  • Social Media
  • Graphic Design

The primary focus will be assisting the AGA, JGA, and SGA Championships communications staff with tournament communications and multimedia projects. These positions are based at the AGA office in Hoover, AL, a suburb of Birmingham.


Responsibilities

  • Communications Support: Assist with AGA, JGA, SGA championships, and USGA qualifiers.
  • Photography/Videography: Serve as staff photographer/videographer, capturing, editing, and sharing footage across social media and websites.
  • Content Creation: Write stories, recaps, press releases, and social media posts for championships.
  • Graphic Design & Social Media Management: Create and post content on all AGA, JGA, and SGA channels.
  • Research & Editing: Support writing, fact-checking, and proofing for tournament coverage.
  • Tournament Operations: Assist on-site and off-site as needed.
  • Department Overview: Gain exposure to Tournament Operations, Handicapping, and Course Rating.
  • Traveling Role: Limited time in the office; primarily working on-site at events.
  • Work Schedule: 40–60 hours per week, including non-traditional hours depending on assignments.
  • Reporting: Reports directly to the Director of Marketing, Media & Communications.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to live in the Birmingham Metro Area during the internship.
  • Willingness to travel extensively, work early mornings, weekends, and endure extreme weather.
  • Strong work ethic, communication skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Preferred Skills:
    • Excellent news writing and editing.
    • Photography, videography, and editing experience.
    • Proficiency with Adobe Suite, Microsoft Word, Canva, and MailChimp.
    • Effective communication through phone, email, websites, and social media.
  • Golf background or strong interest in golf is a plus (but not required).
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift/manage equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be an amateur golfer (PGM students are eligible; PGA professionals/apprentices are ineligible).

Compensation

  • $2,250 per month
    • Medical benefits available at additional cost.
  • All work-related travel expenses (meals, lodging, mileage) are covered.
  • Staff clothing provided: Polo Ralph Lauren (AGA) and Holderness & Bourne (SGA).

About The P.J. Boatwright, Jr. Internship Program

Established in 1991 by the USGA, this program provides hands-on experience for individuals pursuing careers in golf administration. Interns assist state and regional golf associations in promoting amateur golf on a short-term, entry-level basis.
