Seasonal Birding Walk Series

The Learning and Engagement Department is excited to announce a new seasonal birding walk series here at your Birmingham Zoo! Three times a year (Winter, Spring, and Summer), in collaboration with Alabama Audubon, we will be hosting a birding walk on Birmingham Zoo grounds. Led by Alabama Audubon representative, Greg Harber, you will have the chance to learn about the backyard birds present during all four seasons.

One of our walks will be held during a major citizen science event, the Great Backyard Bird Count (February 12th-15th, 2027). Come add to the biodiversity science happening in your very own state! No previous birding experience is necessary. If you require binoculars, they will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
When: 8:00am to 10:00am on the day of the event
Where: YOUR Birmingham Zoo (2630 Cahaba Road, Birmingham, AL 35223)
Please meet the Birmingham Zoo representatives in front of the Children’s Zoo Gate entrance (to the right of the main entrance) 5-10 minutes before the event starts.
Cost: FREE (Admission to the Birmingham Zoo is NOT included. If you wish to visit the zoo after the event, you will have to re-enter through the main entrance and purchase admission there.)
What to wear: Please dress according to the weather. We suggest closed-toed shoes and a hat or sunglasses. Please be sure to dress according to the weather of the day. These events will happen rain
or shine. If a major weather event is predicted, and we need to cancel or reschedule, you will be notified by email the night before.
Accessibility: This activity requires walking short distances on uneven terrain. This event will cover around 1-2 miles of ground, walking at a mild to moderate pace. At times, the path may be covered in rocks, sticks, or include a gentle incline.

This event is free, but registration is required. Our maximum capacity is 30 people. Please note that failure to sign up beforehand may result in being turned away at the entrance. Admission to the Birmingham Zoo is not included with this event.

December 5th, 2026: Winter Birding Walk with Greg Harber

Did you know Alabama has a larger number of bird species in winter than in summer? This is because there is an influx of northern breeding birds who come to stay the winter in our temperate Gulf Coast climate. Join an Alabama Audubon representative and your Birmingham Zoo employees for a jaunt in the wintry
woods on the lookout for these northern visitors.

February 13th, 2027: Great Backyard Bird Count with Greg Harber

Join Alabama Audubon representatives at your Birmingham Zoo for the Great Backyard Bird Count, one of the largest citizen science projects in the world! Spot cool birds, make new friends, and have a grand ole time romping through the woods. No previous birding experience needed.

June 5th, 2027: Summer Birding Walk with Greg Harber

The last (but certainly not least) birding walk of the series! Led by our Birmingham Zoo volunteers, along with an Alabama Audubon representative, this feathered foray into the forest will have you ooh-ing and ahh-ing at these early summer birds.
