Scissor-tailed Flycatcher Event at the Black Belt
The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher is one of the most iconic birds of North American prairies, including the Alabama Black Belt, and is our Bird of the Year for 2026. Each year we focus on a bird in Alabama that is in need of conservation effort.
The species is in steep decline across nearly its entire range. It represents the general decline in grassland birds, which are disappearing faster than any other group of birds in the U.S. The Black Belt is one of about six isolated populations in North America.
Join Alabama Audubon’s staff in Hale County, as we go in search of these special birds along County Roads 9 and 10.
