Matsuno-Mori Modern Kimono Fashion Show

Experience a unique celebration of culture, fashion, and international collaboration at the Matsuno-Mori Modern Kimono Fashion Show on April 12 at the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center in Birmingham. This visually striking event showcases original kimono designs created by approximately 30 Samford University students using authentic fabrics from Japan, offering a fresh, modern interpretation of a centuries-old art form. Guests will also enjoy a dynamic opening performance featuring tap, shamisen, and marimba, along with an exhibition of traditional kimonos in the Sirote Theatre lobby that highlights the evolution of this iconic garment. Presented as part of the Matsuno-Mori Initiative—which fosters cultural exchange between Japan and Birmingham, sister cities—the event blends education, artistry, and global connection. Performances begin at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., with doors opening one hour prior. All proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Sister Cities Commission to support ongoing cultural exchange programs.
