IRONDALE, AL — Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. is inviting the community to a special screening of The Alabama Solution, an Oscar-nominated documentary that examines the realities of Alabama’s prison system through six years of investigative journalism and footage captured by incarcerated individuals.
Directed by Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman, the HBO documentary premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 98th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 15, 2026. The film has sparked significant national conversation about criminal justice reform and conditions within one of the country’s largest state prison systems.
“This is an Alabama story, and it matters here more than anywhere else in the country,” said Mayor Stewart. “I want our community to experience this film together, reflect together, and have an honest conversation about what it means for our state and our future.”
The screening will take place at the Irondale Public Library, the City’s new $8.6 million facility that has quickly become a hub for community gathering and civic engagement.
The event is part of the City of Irondale’s ongoing Black History Month observance and its broader commitment to meaningful civic dialogue and community connection. A brief moderated discussion will follow the film.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn more about the Irondale Citizen Engagement Institute, which launches its ninth class in March 2026.
