Plan to explore Mobile’s local shops and boutiques and stop for drinks, treats, lunch and dinner to customize your Mobile holiday shopping getaway itinerary.

2. Gilded Age experiences for your holiday shopping getaway

For the 2026 holiday season, Mobile is leaning fully into the Gilded Age. Think top hats, corsets and over-the-top parties.

Founded in 1702, Mobile is Alabama’s oldest city, predating the United States, and six nations have governed it. So while nearly every experience is layered with history, others focus on specific snapshots in time.

Don’t miss these uniquely Mobile Gilded Age experiences on your holiday shopping getaway:

🧐 Did you know? Mobile-native Alva Belmont inspired HBO’s “The Gilded Age” writers in developing the Bertha Russell character, portrayed by actress Carrie Coon.

Mrs. Belmont is pictured here during her first marriage to William K. Vanderbilt, dressed as a “Venetian Renaissance Lady” to host the grand Vanderbilt Ball of 1883.

Mrs. Belmont was born Alva Erskine Smith in 1853 in a home built a year earlier at 201 Government Street in Mobile. When the Murray Forbes Smith home was demolished in 1930, Mobilians Walter and Bessie Bellingrath salvaged its handmade bricks and used them in their circa-1936 house at Bellingrath Gardens & Home in nearby Theodore.
