Professional softball is coming to the Birmingham-metro area.

This week, the Professional Softball League (PSL) announced the creation of a six-team league that will include an independently-owned organization called the Birmingham Iron.

The local team is owned by Matt Kornegay, who also serves as USA Softball Commissioner for the state of Florida and is a director for USA Softball of Alabama.

The team will play at Bill Roberts Stadium at Hewitt-Trussville High School.

Kornegay told Bham Now he sees it as a big moment for the city:

“It’s an opportunity for Birmingham to support women athletics. This is an opportunity for Birmingham to showcase what kind of town it is, what kind of sports town it is.”

Matt Kornegay, Birmingham Iron Owner
