How to help Gulf Coast pets affected by Hurricane Isaias
Reading time: 2 minutes

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) is moving animals out of its shelter to make room for pets displaced by Hurricane Isaias as the storm approaches the Gulf Coast.
GBHS sends shelter animals north before Hurricane Isaias
GBHS staff and volunteers spent Friday morning preparing dogs and cats for transport. The animals were walked, crates were loaded into vans and the group headed to the airport for a flight to receiving shelters outside the storm’s path.
Moving animals out frees up space at GBHS for pets from shelters in Isaias’ path, and it helps coastal shelters preserve resources they may need in the coming days.
GBHS worked with BISSELL Pet Foundation, Wings of Rescue and MSPCA-Angell on the transport.
GBHS needs crate and carrier donations for Gulf Coast shelters
GBHS first put out an urgent call for supplies on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The shelter still needs:
- Dog crates of all sizes, especially large + extra-large
- Cat carriers
- New or gently used crates + carriers that are clean, secure + in working condition
Crates can be left at the front entrance of GBHS, which accepts drop-offs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
How to support GBHS emergency response efforts
Anyone who doesn’t have a crate to spare can donate to GBHS emergency response efforts at gbhs.org/donate. GBHS is also asking the community to share its posts with neighborhood groups, friends and family.
