Two years after it first opened, University Tacos’ downtown Birmingham location is winding down operations. Don’t worry, though—the original isn’t going anywhere.
About University Tacos
Founded in 2014, University Tacos is a popular Birmingham restaurant known for its authentic, made-from-scratch Mexican food and friendly service. Located at 2009 University Boulevard, University Tacos is a favorite of UAB students and employees in search of delicious street tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tostadas and much more. Following the closure of neighboring Lucy’s Coffee & Tea, University Tacos expanded their University Boulevard location into the former Lucy’s space to add additional seating for their guests.
In 2024, University Tacos opened a second location in the former Miami Fusion Café space in downtown Brmingham. Located at 2015 5th Ave N, the new restaurant featured a stunning, vibrant mural created by lifelong painter and local muralist Dewon Moton.

Two years after it opened, University Tacos is closing its 5th Avenue location. According to a University Tacos employee, the restaurant’s final day in operation will be Friday, August 28. Luckily, the restaurant’s original location on University Boulevard isn’t going anywhere.
