In Titusville, just south of downtown between Highway 11 and I-65, a six-acre campus is taking on a new purpose.
The property is now home to the Titusville Social Commons—a growing community hub designed to bring nonprofits, businesses, educational opportunities and community resources together under one roof.
And with construction now complete and the campus 85% leased, that vision is beginning to take shape. We got a tour of Titusville Social Commons to learn more about its mission to revitalize the area, plus how the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham helped bring the vision to life.
Key points about Titusville Social Commons in Birmingham
What is Titusville Social Commons?

Social Commons is a community hub owned by Common Thread, and shaped by what Titusville residents and community leaders said they want: a beautiful, welcoming space that could provide both opportunity and connection.
Common Thread is a Birmingham organization focused on creating spaces where nonprofits and mission-driven entrepreneurs can grow while meeting the needs of residents in historically underserved neighborhoods.
“The mission of Social Commons is to create a place where people, organizations, and businesses come together to strengthen the Titusville community,”
Ashley Foster, Common Thread
The campus spans six acres and nearly 60,000 square feet across two renovated buildings. Today, it’s home to a growing mix of nonprofits and businesses focused on everything from workforce development and education to entrepreneurship, wellness and community gathering.
But the idea behind Social Commons goes beyond simply putting a variety of organizations in the same place—it’s also about creating opportunities for those organizations to collaborate.
“Rather than trying to solve every problem ourselves, we provide the space, partnerships and resources that allow others to do their best work while creating lasting impact for the community.”
Ashley Foster, Common Thread
Revitalizing Titusville + surrounding areas with community ideas

Social Commons is creating access to things like job training, education, entrepreneurship support, wellness resources and community events, all in one place.
And each organization on the campus has been selected with that purpose in mind.
“Every tenant on our campus is selected because they help meet a real need in Titusville.
As the campus continues to grow, we hope every resource answers a simple question: ‘Does this make life better for the people of Titusville?’ If it helps create jobs, strengthen families, improve education, foster relationships, or build community, it belongs here.
Ashley Foster, Common Thread
What’s happening inside—small business, nonprofits + more

Today, the campus is home to a diverse group of nonprofits, businesses and entrepreneurs. The objective is to not only create resources for area residents, but create things that bring people to Titusville.
Six nonprofit organizations anchor the campus:
- A4One — athletic training + mentoring
- BuildUP Community School — education + career preparation
- HICA! — advocating for Latinos + immigrants in Alabama
- Magic City ToolBank — a tool-lending library that helps local nonprofits access the equipment they need
- Tune Up Auto Mechanics Training — hands-on automotive education + workforce development
- YouthBuild — community-based workforce development for young adults
The businesses and entrepreneur tenants include RLG Productions, Step by Step Sports Training, The Grove Wedding and Events and King Kutz Barbershop.

It takes a village to create hubs like Titusville Social Commons

Getting Social Commons to this point wasn’t easy, says Executive Director Nick Crawford. For him, the project came with sacrifices and moments when it wasn’t clear how everything would come together.
“Most people who walk through these doors will never know what it took to get here, and that’s okay. What matters is that this space is being used every day by people in the community and around the city.
Seeing it filled with life, relationships and opportunity makes it special. Social Commons has always been bigger than any one person, and I’m grateful to see the impact it’s having today.”
Nick Crawford, Executive Director, Common Thread
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham works behind the scenes on projects like this through initiatives including Impact Investing, which provides mission-minded organizations with access to affordable capital for projects that can create lasting community impact.
In 2024, the Foundation provided a $200,000 low-interest loan to OPAL Community Capital to support the expansion of Social Commons. But the larger goal is to help more community-driven ideas take root across the Birmingham area.
