New 18-hole putting course clears Homewood planning commission

About 30 years ago, there were putt-putt golf courses scattered all around the Birmingham area. Now, they are few and far between, but thanks to a trio of Homewood residents, there could be a shiny-new club to play putt-putt, enjoy a drink and watch the big game with friends.
The West Homewood neighborhood is now one step closer to opening a new, 18-hole outdoor putting course and entertainment complex called The Woods Golf & Social.
Homewood Planning Commission recommend mini-golf project
The Homewood Planning Commission voted 7-0 on Tuesday, Aug. 4, to give a favorable recommendation for the project located at 504 and 508 Scott St., between Oxmoor Boulevard and Oxmoor Street.
The concept is the brainchild of Homewood locals Owen Ferguson, Jack Dorough and Tommy Donaldson.
“Back in November, when this 504 Scott Street land came for sale, I was like — this is the right time. You’ve got all these great restaurants, great development going on, a lot of excitement over in the West Homewood district. This land fits what we need.”

More than a mini-golf course
The Woods is not part of a franchise, according to Ferguson, and it’s not like the mini-golf you see at the beach.
The course designer is Arizona-based Putt Tek, a group that specializes in building mini-golf courses that look and mimic real putting greens. They have designed more than 105 courses throughout the U.S.
In addition to the course, The Woods will include luxury amenities:
- Clubhouse
- Grand lobby
- Entertainment lawn
- Covered patio + bar
- Large TV wall for game day events
- Party cabanas
- Full service bar + grill
- 22 parking spaces
Ferguson also told the planning commission they intend to organize tournaments and leagues for all ages, gatherings for sporting events, live music, trivia and game nights.
Residents and commissioners expressed some concerns about potential noise issues, especially if the business stays open late in the evening.
