On July 28 and 29, 2026, more than 50,000 fans packed into Protective Stadium for back-to-back, sold-out performances from Chris Brown and Usher during their North American stadium tour, The R&B Tour. For two epic nights, the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC)’s outdoor multi-use stadium was the epicenter of the largest touring production to ever roll through Birmingham—with dazzling lights, flawless choreography and hit after nostalgic hit.

The R&B Tour, starring Usher and Chris Brown, was the biggest tour in Birmingham’s history
When Chris Brown wowed the Magic City with a sold-out stadium show during his 2025 Breezy Bowl XX Tour, I wasn’t sure how the BJCC would be able to top that—much less a year later.
After ten years living in Birmingham, you’d think I’d know better.
As July rounded out, fans traveled from far and wide for an unforgettable night with two era-defining powerhouses from the aughts. With a combined catalog of catchy singles, multi-platinum albums and GRAMMY Awards, Chris Brown and Usher delivered a dynamic performance of R&B hits, fan interactions and—of course—signature high-flying aerial stunts.
While Chris Brown and Usher were undeniably the evenings’ stars, it took hundreds of people working behind-the-scenes to make the concert a smashing success.
Transforming Protective Stadium into Birmingham’s biggest outdoor concert venue
Long before the first fans scanned their tickets, a veritable army of production crews spent countless hours transforming Protective Stadium from a sporting venue into a world-class concert destination.
In the weeks leading up to the concert, scores of 18-wheelers transported staging, lighting, audio equipment, rigging and other touring essentials into the stadium. In fact, the stage—or rather, two stages connected by a runway—required 85 18-wheelers all by itself!
As the equipment poured in, more than 700 workers spent long hours installing 11,650 protective flooring tiles, massive LED screens, dramatic lighting rigs and colorful strobes that changed vibes depending on which R&B star was performing. For Chris Brown’s signature cross-stadium flight, crews installed a specialized wire-harness rigging, complete with high-speed winches, that allowed him to glide effortlessly around Protective—all without missing a beat.
All told, it took four days for crews to load, build and ready the set before the show took place.
For a production like The R&B Tour, it takes a village
Before Protective Stadium opened its gates, 850 employees were on-site both nights to ensure a seamless guest experience for every last one of the more than 50,000 people who bought a ticket.
From concessions teams and ushers (the job, not the star) to security personnel and Uptown Jam Tram drivers, every department played a critical role in keeping the event running smoothly. Behind the scenes, BJCC operations teams monitored everything from communications to the weather—all working together to make sure Birmingham’s biggest concert experience went according to plan.
