Of the 20 building permits issued this past week for construction projects exceeding $1 million, four are for projects here in the Birmingham metro.

Projects in Birmingham receiving new building permits include renovations to UAB’s Blount Hall, new offices for Brasfield & Gorrie and the transformation of a hotel along the 280 corridor into an affordable housing complex for veterans.

Birmingham Veteran Village taking shape at The Colonnade

In October of 2025, the Tunnel to Towers organization acquired the Spark by Hilton hotel located at 4300 Colonnade Parkway to transform it into Birmingham Veteran Village, a veteran housing complex with wrap-around on-site support services.

Once completed, the Birmingham Veteran Village will offer 110 units of stable housing and onsite access to services such as:

  • Job training and employment support
  • Educational resources
  • Mental health and PTSD counseling
  • Addiction recovery services
  • Medical care access
  • Help navigating VA benefits

Tunnel to Towers provides mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children and by building specially adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.

The Birmingham Veteran Village is the organization’s first project in Alabama. Brown Construction & Development was issued a $9.2 million permit for the project, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
