Three prominent KFC locations in the Birmingham metro area have officially shut down in the last few months, leaving empty storefronts in their wake.

The closures affect three communities across Jefferson County:

  • Ensley: 1800 20th Street
  • Trussville: 1674 Gadsden Highway
  • Hueytown: 3065 Allison Bonnett Memorial Drive

These locations have gone dark on digital delivery platforms and mapping services. Passersby may notice that the iconic KFC red-and-white branding has disappeared as the structures are prepared for future commercial use.

Why closed KFC locations are being painted white

Similar real estate shifts are happening across the United States. Over the last few months, social media posts across TikTok, Reddit and X have documented a widespread pattern of KFC locations closing abruptly.

Images posted on social media show shuttered restaurants completely covered in plain white paint, leading some to believe that the locations may become a new fast food chain like White Castle.

Franchise agreements often require store operators to remove all proprietary branding, logos and signature color schemes immediately upon a store’s closing. The blank white appearance prevents consumer confusion, shields the corporate brand from liability and readies the building for a new commercial tenant or property sale.
