Motorists heading north on I-59 near Trussville over the next few weeks should be aware that the northbound on- and off-ramps at Chalkville Mountain Road (exit 141) are currently closed due to an ongoing project to widen I-59 to three lanes between I-459 and Exit 141.

On January 6, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) began the second phase of the I-59 widening project between I-459 and Exit 141 in Trussville. The end goal of the project—which cost $70,377,212.87 in total—is to add a third lane to I-59 between I-459 and Exit 141, a busy section of the interstate frequented by Trussville, Pinson and Clay residents.

As part of the second phase, ALDOT has closed both I-59 northbound ramps at Chalkville Mountain Road (Exit 141), meaning motorists cannot exit or enter Northbound I-59 at Chalkville Mountain Road.

In addition to the exit ramp closures, I-59 northbound traffic has also shifted to the left two inside lanes to allow crews to work on the outside lane. This creates a different traffic pattern for the movement from I-459 north onto I-59 north. Drivers should use caution when navigating the new temporary ramp.

According to an ALDOT press release, contractor Wiregrass Construction Co. has about four months remaining to open the widened northbound lanes. The contractor has a $1M incentive to reopen the entrance and exit ramps within 40 days.

The entire project should be completed by Spring 2027.
