New 75-acre data center in Birmingham issued building permit

Of the 22 new building permits issued across the state this past week for construction projects exceeding $1 million, three are for projects in the Birmingham metro area.

A $7 million permit was issued as part of a major data center project at the former Regions Lakeshore Operations Center site.

New data center in Birmingham

Birmingham’s Hoar Construction was issued a $7 million building permit last week, part of a larger project involving a 75-acre data center. Amsterdam-based technology company Nebius will operate the data center, located off Lakeshore Parkway.

Nebius applied for the permit for the data center back in January.

The data center is designed to support advanced artificial intelligence workloads and high-performance computing systems.
