Birmingham metro dominates 2026 Alabama’s Best Places to Live list

Eight of the top ten best places to live in Alabama are in the Birmingham metro area, according to a survey released by Niche.

The popular data-driven platform known for its evaluation of schools and colleges released its 12th annual Best Places to Live in America rankings in late March.

This year’s report analyzed more than 230 cities and 18,000 locations nationwide. Data used to come up with the rankings include:

  • K-12 school data
  • U.S. Census Bureau
  • Bureau of Labor Statistics
  • CDC to assess safety, diversity and walkability
  • Local housing market

2026 Best Places to Live in Alabama list

Which places in Alabama, which range from suburbs and big municipalities, made the top ten?

Surprisingly, Meadowbrook, the unincorporated community off US-280 in Shelby County, topped the list, followed by 9 cities.

The list: 

  1. Meadowbrook
  2. Madison
  3. Auburn
  4. Hoover
  5. Homewood
  6. Vestavia Hills
  7. Mountain Brook
  8. Indian Springs Village
  9. Helena
  10. Pelham

Between 11-20 in the rankings, six additional Birmingham Metro area communities made the list, including two city of Birmingham neighborhoods: Forest Park and North Crestwood.
