On Thursday, April 2, Longleaf Recovery and Wellness broke ground on Longleaf Lodge—a state-of-the-art, 60-bed residential substance use treatment facility in Shelby County. The new facility will be among the few licensed non-hospital facilities in Alabama to accept commercial insurance for residential treatment.
Longleaf Recovery & Wellness breaks ground on Longleaf Lodge

Founded in 2021, Longleaf Recovery & Wellness is a behavioral health organization operating multiple outpatients across Alabama.
“We’re building a program that reflects the reality that addiction doesn’t just disrupt biology, it dismantles relationships, careers and identity. Treatment has to account for all of that.”
Colin Harris, Founder & CEO, Longleaf Recovery and Wellness
With four locations throughout the state—Longleaf Wellness Birmingham, Birmingham Recovery Center, Longleaf Recovery Baldwin and Longleaf Recovery Huntsville—the organization is committed to providing comprehensive care for adults, children and families struggling with addiction.
Today, the organization broke ground on its fifth facility: Longleaf Lodge. Located in the rolling hills of Shelby County, the new facility is purpose-built around Longleaf’s whole-person model of care that integrates clinical treatment with environment, community and connection to the natural world.

With 60 beds—including 10 dedicated medical detox beds—Longleaf Lodge will serve patients from the earliest and most medically complex stages of recovery through long-term stability.
“For so long in Alabama, people had to face limited options. Longleaf is leading the way with innovation and compassion. As we break ground today, we are also breaking ground on a future with greater access, stronger support, and more hope for individuals and families across the state.”
Kim Boswell, Commissioner, Alabama Department of Mental Health
Longleaf Lodge is the result of a collaborative effort among partners committed to the Alabama community, including:
- Goodwyn Mills Cawod — Architecture and engineering design firm
- WatsonBruhn Builders — General contractor
- LEMOINE — Construction management services
- River Bank & Trust — Financing
