It’s been nearly a year to the day since the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama broke ground on its new, state-of-the-art distribution facility at 4336 Turin Dr. in Bessemer. Located along Lakeshore Parkway, the new facility is twice as big as the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama’s current facility and will allow the nonprofit food distributor to accept, store and distribute more fresh and frozen food to central Alabama families facing hunger.

“This building is about more than square footage—it’s about removing obstacles so more food can reach more people. By investing in this space, we’re strengthening our ability to increase access to food today while building the capacity to meet the needs of our neighbors for years to come.”

Nicole Williams, CEO, Community Food Bank of Central Alabama

With the new distribution facility set to open this summer, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama teamed up with three local muralists to create a striking, lasting symbol of the community’s commitment to feeding its neighbors. That symbol—a massive, 16,000+-square-foot mural spanning the front of the facility—is now nearly complete and visible to passersby along Lakeshore Parkway.

About Alabama’s largest mural

Over the past two weeks, muralists Marcus Fetch, Dewon Moton and Shawn Fitzwater have emptied over 300 cans of spray paint and countless gallons of paint to create a new mural that represents the mission of the Community Food Bank.

“As someone who’s worked in the nonprofit world for a long time, the Community Food Bank addresses one of the most basic needs of Central Alabama families. Feeding people—that’s where it starts. We designed this mural to reflect the warmth of the people who dedicate their lives to feeding their neighbors.”

Standing 38 feet tall and stretching 422 feet wide—that’s 16,036 square feet, for any curious number crunchers—the artwork is Alabama’s largest mural. The mural itself depicts 12 people—representing the 12 Central Alabama counties served by the Community Food Bank—volunteering with the nonprofit organization, backed by a hillside and skyline that blends into the existing landscape.

“Personally, I love the anatomy of each of our subjects. That’s my area of expertise—taking a hand, blowing it up 20 times as big and figuring out where the shadows, contour and lighting come in to make it look realistic at scale.”

According to Fetch, the trio of muralists aims to complete the mural within the next two weeks. The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama’s new facility is set to open in June 2026.
