Spring in Birmingham means one thing: It’s officially hosting season. From sunny afternoons outside to cozy nights in with friends, there’s no shortage of ways to gather this time of year.

Sure, it’s easy to fill a bowl of chips and park it on the couch to watch a show with your friends, but we found a local apartment community that helps you take your hosting game up a notch.

We caught up with residents at The Whitby to learn how they’re making the most of their spaces this spring—and picked up a few hosting tips along the way.

Celebrate milestones: Friends and family welcome

For resident Caitlin, one of the biggest priorities when moving was making sure she could still host friends and family—and at The Whitby, that hasn’t been an issue.

Since moving in last August, she’s hosted events across the property, including her son’s birthday party in the club room, gatherings at the pool and grill area and nights in the Sky Lounge and rooftop spaces like Highgrove View and Lancaster Keep.

“We’re a big football family, and the TVs in the lobby merge so we can watch games for days. For my son’s birthday, we wanted somewhere the adults could hang out too, and it worked perfectly.”

“I’ve always been the hostess, I didn’t want to lose that by moving into an apartment—and here, I didn’t have to.”

When the weather is nice, she and her guests love grilling burgers, eating outside and playing games like cornhole.

Host with the girls: Take it outside

If your ideal spring day includes a picnic blanket, snacks and your favorite people, you’re not alone.

At The Whitby, residents love taking advantage of the community’s Notting Hill open green space, located near the community’s resort-style pool, cabanas and outdoor lounges.

With added perks like a hammock garden, grilling stations and a fire pit, it’s an easy go-to for hosting everything from casual brunches to sunset hangouts. Bring a few drinks, set out a charcuterie board and enjoy being outside without having to leave home.

Plan a dog park playdate: Furry best friends are welcome

For pet owners, hosting doesn’t have to stop with your human friends.

The Whitby’s Ryecroft Meadow leash-free dog park gives residents a built-in space to gather while their pups run and play. It’s perfect for dog owners to hang out—just invite a few friends, bring your dogs and let them do the socializing.

Afterward, residents can head to the on-site Westminster Kennel Club Dog Spa, a dedicated grooming area with elevated tubs and grooming stations. It’s a convenient way to clean up after a fun afternoon outside and keep your pet looking its best.

Turn wellness into a social event: Make new friends

Looking for a different way to host? Try making it active.

The Whitby’s Harbour Club fitness center and yoga studio offer residents a space to work out together without leaving the property. Whether it’s a group yoga session, Pilates class or quick workout with friends, it’s a fun way to stay consistent with your wellness routine while still spending time together.

Plus, it’s easy to turn it into a full hang—just plan to grab coffee or a smoothie in nearby Lee Branch afterward.

Let Whitby host for you: all the fun, no setup

Sometimes the best hosting moments happen right at home. The Whitby offers a variety of events, ranging from simple grab-and-go breakfasts to lively outdoor music nights.

Recent favorites include Bagels & Bouquets, the Chili Cook-off and Night in Notting Hill, featuring live music on the lawn. These gatherings create opportunities for neighbors to connect and provide a welcoming space to meet new friends.

Whether planning a picnic, a group workout or a relaxed night in, The Whitby makes it easy to bring people together and enjoy the moment.
