10 native plant sales + shops to know in Birmingham

Birmingham is blooming, which means it’s time to get your garden ready. Spring into the season with local plant sales and shops—we found three native plant sales and more local shops and garden centers, but let us know where you’re headed to stock up for the season!

Spring plant sales in Birmingham

1. March 28: Walden Farmacy

The plant sale season kicks off at Walden Farmacy. Owners Trevor and Joanna Mann will lead a class on their permaculture-style homestead and take you on a tour of their farm. Plus, they’ll have some trees and shrubs for sale! Reserve a spot now.

2. April 4, 11, 18 + 25: Ruffner Mountain

Jefferson County Greenways Commission hosts an annual native plant sale at Ruffner Mountain every Saturday in April. Plus, every plant purchased and planted helps support local ecosystems and green spaces at Red Mountain Park, Ruffner Mountain and Turkey Creek Nature Preserve.

Here, you can shop unique plants like Cherokee Sedge, Black-eyed Susan, Woodland Phlox and more.

3. April 16-17: Aldridge Gardens

The Aldridge Gardens plant sale has everything from native plants and pollinators to old favorites and classics like hydrangeas.

Volunteers and gardeners will be on site to help you as you pick out your plants, and offer advice on placement, care and maintenance.

4. April 16-18: Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Thousands of people show up every year for the Birmingham Botanical Gardens native plant sale. Proceeds support the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Garden’s mission: to protect, nurture and share the wonders of Gardens.

Tip: Bring your portable carts and wagons! Checks and cards will be the only accepted payments.

5. Andy’s Creekside Nursery

Brighten up your garden this spring with pops of color or leafy greens from Andy’s Creekside Nursery’s selection of trees, flowers, plants and shrubs.

6. Leaf & Petal

We can’t make a local plant guide without including Leaf & Petal. With four different locations across Greater Birmingham, they have a huge selection of flowers, plants, garden decor and more.

7. Collier’s Nursery

Collier’s Nursery is one of Birmingham’s most popular garden centers because of its large selection of high-quality plants and garden items, plus its friendly and top-notch customer service.

8. Sweet Peas Garden Shop

Sweet Peas Garden Shop is a family-owned spot in the heart of downtown Homewood.

They have everything you need for a garden refresh, including:

  • Perennials
  • Vegetables
  • Herbs
  • Fertilizer
  • Pots
  • Garden Statues

9. Rockett’s Bug Juice Gardens

Rockett’s Bug Juice Gardens has been in the Birmingham area since 1991. In their shop out near Lake Purdy, you’ll find home-grown flowers, assorted pottery and iron works.

10. Warren Family Garden Center

Warren Family Garden Center is your one-stop shop for all your gardening must-haves. They currently have beautiful annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees to spruce up your home for spring.
