At the heart of UWCA’s mission is people, which drives everything they do, starting with its core values:

  • Put people first
  • Serve the community
  • Do the right thing
  • Be collaborative

The team knows that the work they do wouldn’t be possible if they didn’t hold those values internally as well.

Karla Lawrence, Senior Vice President of Community Initiatives and Programs, came to UWCA knowing that its mission impacts countless people and communities across Central Alabama—it’s the main reason she joined the team in the first place.

In Karla’s department alone, she and her team oversee tons of partner agencies and programs. You might know a few:

“We’ve added a lot of opportunities because there were needs in the community not being met. Anytime there’s an unmet need or an agency that can’t fill responsibilities, UWCA steps in to help.

We helped out with Meals on Wheels and the Area Agency on Aging, and those are two programs that we still operate today. That in itself has created a lot of job opportunities.”

The beauty of working for this Birmingham nonprofit is that there’s always room to grow.

“We have talented folks that come in, and we evaluate to see who brings what to the table. We provide a lot of development opportunities and training because ultimately, when we do see that talent, we can quickly identify those who might be a good fit for a new role.”

Take it from some other UWCA employees:

It’s easy to read stories like this and think, “It can’t be that good.” But for UWCA, it is. Karla and her teammates love their job because of their coworkers, work environment and the rewarding work they do for broader communities.

“If someone is interested in serving the community and making an impact on others’ lives, UWCA is the perfect opportunity to do that.”
