The Little Mermaid ballet tells a story of star-crossed lovers

The Little Mermaid is an original ballet by MCPA Artistic Director Stephanie Rangel, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless story.
This tale takes you along with the Little Mermaid, who has been fascinated by land her whole life, but going to the ocean’s surface is forbidden until the little mermaid comes of age. And once she does, she sees the prince, falls in love with him and decides to leave the sea to be with her true love.
Bringing a new version of The Little Mermaid to Birmingham

Stephanie Rangel loved Hans Christen Anderson’s fairytale, fell in love with her dad’s statue replica of the Little Mermaid and always dreamed of restaging it into a ballet of her own.
“My dad kept a small statue of the mermaid on a rock on his desk, and I always looked at her, wondering what she was longing for. Growing up in Florida by the ocean, I became fascinated by the patterns in the water and the freedom the horizon gives a person, and the peace that we feel when we are on the shore.”

So, she did it!
“I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to create this ballet, and I was gifted such an incredible group of dancers who perform with depth, heart and determination.”

But Stephanie’s dream couldn’t come true without the support of her team and the talent of dancers across Birmingham (and beyond!)
“My staff is full of heart. I’m constantly amazed by the teamwork, encouragement and inspiration from every corner of this project. The costume designers, teachers, digital designers, set designers, principals, professionals, students and children are all part of this, and it’s magical to witness.
Telling the story of self-sacrificial love and doing the right thing in all circumstances is what brings this ballet to life.”
