Heads up, Birmingham! The Alabama Department of Transportation will begin to close all lanes on US-280 at Pump House Road on Friday evening, March 20, at 11:00PM.

The lane closures will last for 3 days until March 23, 6:00AM.

Where is Pump House Road and why does it matter?

Pump House Road is a major gateway into Cahaba Heights and Vestavia Hills neighborhoods.

It is located between Cahaba Village, the development anchored by Whole Foods and Cahaba Road/Dolly Ridge Road, another main artery which takes you into Cahaba Heights and is a back road for folks traveling to the Colonnade.

The bridge demolition is essential to widen US-280 to four lanes in each direction from Lakeshore Parkway to I-459.

Here is what motorists need to know:

  • Friday, March 20 at 11PM, crews will close all US-280 lanes, both westbound and eastbound
  • Eastbound lanes (toward The Summit) will remain closed until Monday, March 23
  • Westbound lanes (toward downtown Birmingham) will reopen each morning at 5AM before closing again at 11PM
  • Monday, March 23, all lanes will reopen no later than 6AM

ALDOT recommends motorists use Lakeshore Parkway to I-65 to I-459 to US-280 as a main detour heading east and the reverse route order for westbound trips.
