A new chapter for local thrifting is taking shape on Mary Taylor Road in Trussville. Vapor Thrift Store, a religious nonprofit-owned thrift store, has officially broken ground on its first “built-to-suit” location in Trussville.

Vapor Ministries’ first thrift store was opened in Greystone in 2009, making it a mainstay in the second-hand scene in Birmingham. Expansion began in 2017, when the second location in Vestavia Hills opened.

Today, there are four locations — and Trussville will be the fifth.

The store sells a variety of items, including:

  • Clothing, shoes + jewelry
  • Sporting equipment
  • Books, media + toys
  • Furniture, rugs + decor

The Trussville project represents a significant shift in strategy, according to Vapor Ministries. Unlike its existing shops in Vestavia Hills, Greystone, Westover and the recently opened Pell City store, this 15,000-square-foot facility is being constructed from the foundation up, specifically for Vapor’s unique operations.

At a glance: Vapor Thrift Store Trussville

  • Location: Mary Taylor Road (adjacent to Freddy’s Frozen Custard)
  • Size: Approx. 15,000–16,000 square feet
  • Projected opening: Fall 2026
  • Mission: Funding humanitarian aid across Africa and Haiti

Efficiency by design

Ryan Bartels, Communications Coordinator for Vapor Ministries, says the move to a custom build is a “massive blessing” for the organization.

“Instead of being in a strip or leasing a property that previously existed, this will be an opportunity to to have a location that is from the ground up built to be a Vapor Thrift Store… Doing the ground-up build increases efficiency because the store will operate exactly like we envision.”

The custom layout will streamline how the store processes donations and manages surplus inventory.

For example, if a surplus of a specific item — like picture frames — arrives in Trussville, the facility is designed to easily move those resources to other Central Alabama locations via their trucking service.

Weathering the storm

The construction process has already seen its fair share of struggle. During a recent surge of severe weather, a tornado touched down directly adjacent to the site, flipping a construction trailer and damaging neighboring businesses.

Remarkably, a supply chain delay actually protected the project. Because the delivery of metal studs and framing materials had been pushed back, the supplies were not yet on-site to be damaged.

“God has had his hand on it so far, protecting us from damage which obviously could have set us back on our timeline.”

A global mission in every aisle

For shoppers hunting for hidden treasures, the impact of their purchase stretches far beyond their closet. Every dollar raised at Vapor Thrift Stores offsets the costs of humanitarian outreach in Haiti, Kenya and Togo.

The revenue supports several charitable services, including:

  • Clean water: Over 105 million cups of water served annually
  • Health + nutrition: Millions of meals and health services for those in extreme poverty
  • New growth: A new ministry outreach center is slated to open in Togo this fall

The organization also operates a logistics hub that recycled approximately 853,000 pounds of items last year, diverting massive amounts of waste from local landfills.

Looking ahead

Construction is currently in the early phases, with the slab already poured. In a symbolic gesture of the ministry’s foundation, a Bible was placed within the wet cement during a prayer service at the site.

While an exact opening date remains flexible due to possible construction roadblocks, Vapor is optimistic for a Fall 2026 opening. Locals can expect early donation drives this summer once the building receives its certificate of occupancy.

“We really want people to understand what Vapor is doing and that we see this as far more than a thrift store.”
