Standard Furniture closing downtown location after 114 years in Birmingham

After over a century in Birmingham, Birmingham-based Standard Furniture is closing its downtown showroom at 2016-2020 3rd Avenue North. Although the family-owned retailer is leaving downtown Birmingham, Standard Furniture operates an additional 12 locations in Alabama and Tennessee.
About Standard Furniture

Founded in 1912, Standard Furniture is one of the longest-running family-owned stores in downtown Birmingham. According to the website, founder Felix Shevinsky began by selling Standard Furniture’s wares out of a peddler’s wagon; today, the business is run by Shevinsky’s great-grandson, Jacob Shevin, and operates 13 retail locations in Alabama and Tennessee:

Originally founded as the “Standard Clothing Company,” Standard Furniture transitioned to furniture and appliance sales in 1957. The business relocated to its current location at 2020 3rd Ave North in 1978, notable for its light-up neon sign after dark.

Closing downtown location after 114 years in Birmingham

After 48 years on 3rd Avenue North and 114 years in Birmingham, Standard Furniture is officially closing its downtown showroom. According to a store employee, the downtown Birmingham location is offering a special floor sample sale and will operate at altered hours moving forward:
- 9AM to 6PM on Monday, Friday and Saturday
- 1PM to 6PM on Sunday
- Closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
Although there is no set closing date, the employee estimates that the downtown Birmingham location will close around mid-April.
