Savage’s Bakery is re-opening in Homewood on March 16th.

Kenneth Rhodes, the owner of O’Carr’s Delicatessen, another beloved Homewood culinary institution, finalized the purchase of the 87 year-old bakery today.

Below is a statement Rhodes released to Bham Now detailing Savage’s next chapter.

“For more than 50 years, O’Carr’s Delicatessen has been fortunate to be a member of the Homewood family of unique, successful, and independently-owned businesses that line 18th Street South.

When Savage’s Bakery suddenly announced their closing after 87 years, we were shocked and saddened just as so many of our neighbors and customers were.

After much thought, we realized we couldn’t let the sun set on such a historic and very special part of Homewood. We met with Mr. Van Scott, owner of Savage’s for more than half its lifetime, and came up with a plan.

We are incredibly excited to announce that Savage’s Bakery is now part of the O’Carr’s family! Yes, that means Savage’s is reopening, and will once again be a part of every special occasion and holiday for our customers!

Just as O’Carr’s Deli has remained true to the vision of our founders, we will remain true to that of Savage’s and continue its legacy for future generations to come.

We look forward to welcoming you back beginning March 16!”

Rhodes told Bham Now he bought the recipes, the name, and all the goodwill.

“I’m going to run it (Savage’s) just like he did. Everything is exactly the same. He (Van Scott) is teaching me everything that I need to know to carry it on.”
