Redeemer Community Church, an Avondale non-denominational evangelical Christian church, purchased the majority of an abandoned hospital site Wednesday, according to the church.

The church acquired 18.21 acres of the Trinity Medical Center site for $15.22 million, the Birmingham Business Journal reported Friday.

Redeemer now owns the entire site, according to its website, which includes:

  • More than 25 acres
  • 1,200 parking spaces
  • Open land to develop

The site is set to become “a new home” for the church community “and the generations of believers yet to come, all in the hope that Redeemer might continue to grow as a place of deep hospitality, joyful fellowship and faithful evangelism,” the project website says.

Outgrowing their space

Redeemer Community Church was founded by Joel Brooks at his home in 2008, according to Bham Wiki. The congregation has had many homes since then, including Girls Incorporated in Crestwood North and the Cornerstone School in Woodlawn.

In 2014, the church moved into its Avondale location at 4002 Fourth Ave. S, where its membership has grown from less than 200 people to almost 2,000.

“Our 600-seat sanctuary and surrounding spaces have served us faithfully for more than a decade, but our church family has grown beyond what they can hold. What a joyful challenge it is to see God continue to bring new faces into our family faster than we can make room for them.”

The church says that the Trinity site “offers a rare alignment of location, size and value.”

“That said, this property is much more than just a solution to logistical challenges – we believe it will be a foundation for long-term Gospel impact in Birmingham and beyond.”

Redeemer first announced its intention to acquire the site at 800 Montclair Road back in April 2025, the Birmingham Business Journal reported.
