Last year, local public-private partnership Jefferson County Greenways announced plans to construct a new, 1,800-square-foot covered pavilion with universally accessible restrooms at Red Mountain Park. A project two years in the making, the new pavilion is located at the Frankfurt Drive entrance to the park and is designed to better serve all guests—including those with mobility challenges—who visit Red Mountain Park.

“Red Mountain Park is one of the great shared spaces of our region; it strengthens our health our families and our sense of community.

Infrastructure is not always glamorous—restrooms are not always headline makers. But anyone who has ever brought a child to the park or supported a loved one with mobility challenges knows that access determines participation, and participation determines belonging.

These new accessible restrooms are a practical improvement, but they are also a statement: Red Mountain Park is for everyone.

Congresswoman Sewell is proud to support investments that make daily life and communities stronger.”

The new facility was funded by a partnership of several local and regional entities, including the City of Birmingham, Jefferson County and the State of Alabama.

About Red Mountain Park

Located along the ridge of Red Mountain on the southwest side of the city, Red Mountain Park is a 1,500-acre park full of scenic overlooks, historic industrial destinations and 15 miles of walking, hiking and mountain biking trails.

The park was opened to the public in 2012 and sits on land once used for iron ore mining in Birmingham’s early industrial history. Many relics of that era—including hundred-year-old mine portals—can be seen within the park.
