An international extreme sports competition is coming to Birmingham as the only event of its kind in the United States this year.

The FISE World Series brings together athletes from many extreme sports, including:

The Birmingham City Council passed a resolution Tuesday to allow the mayor to execute an agreement with host Hurricane Group to host the FISE World Series Birmingham at City Walk from Aug. 5-9.

The event is expected to draw athletes and tourists from around the globe.

“I’m thrilled to work alongside the Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau and our economic development partners to bring FISE to both the United States, and to Birmingham.

“Extreme sports are capturing global audiences, and positioning Birmingham as a stop on the path to the Los Angeles Olympics highlights both our city’s energy and our capacity to host world-class events.”

Hunter Williams, Birmingham City Council

Birmingham will contribute up to $1.5 million in financial incentives funded through the $3-per-room-per-night lodging tax fee.

All of the 2026 FISE international series events are:

  • Macau, China – March 14–15
  • Montpellier, France – May 13–17
  • Libreville, Gabon – July 3-5
  • Shanghai, China – Oct. 15–18
  • TBA – Nov. 27–29
  • Paris – Dec. 18–19

More than 20,000 fans are expected at CityWalk for the four days of the competition, according to the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“Birmingham is proud to welcome the FISE World Series back to the United States and serve as the only American host city on the 2026 circuit. As FISE visits global cities like Paris, Macau, Shanghai and Montpellier, this is a huge opportunity for Birmingham to confidently step onto the international stage and share our story with audiences around the world.”

Dan Williams, President and CEO of Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau
