While Luverne, Alabama, is her hometown, Janet has been living and working in Montgomery for the past two decades. Here’s a snapshot of what that’s looked like, most of these things happening simultaneously:

❤️ Raising three boys, now 19, 20 + 25
✂️ Working as a licensed cosmetologist
💰 Various positions with H&R Block, currently tax prep
📍 Guiding history tours of Montgomery
🌐 Serving exchange students as an area rep

She also completed an Associate of Business Administration degree with honors at a community college in May 2023, after which she immediately set her sights on The University of Alabama to earn a bachelor’s degree, enrolling that June. Her thought:

“Okay, I’m going to UA. I’m going, I’m going now, and I’m not waiting any longer. I always wanted to walk the stage at Alabama, and there’s no other college that ever came to mind for me. And I’m gonna keep going, at least until I get my doctorate.”

Bama means business

Love for learning + setting an example

A role at a salon in Montgomery brought Janet there, and her work quickly inspired a goal to own salons one day. She began her education in business to future-proof that plan, aiming to learn all she can about running a business effectively, from finance and operations to marketing and advertising.

Now with almost a decade in tax preparation and office management, she sees a possible entrepreneurial path in that field, too. She says she likes to stay busy and loves to learn.

“My mom passed away when I was 12, and she always said, ‘You’re going to go to college. You’re going to do good, and I want you to make something out of yourself.’ I’ve always made that promise to her and myself. Now that I have kids of my own, I want them to see me doing something good, so they’ll follow my path and do something great as well.”

Beyond The University of Alabama being her school of choice, Janet says UA Online’s flexible structure, quality coursework and strong support checked all the boxes for her goals and busy lifestyle. She’s already applying what she’s learned as she prepares to pursue a master’s degree:

“I didn’t have to pause my life to pursue my education. I can do both at the same time. It has sharpened my thinking skills and connected my academics to real-world, real-life challenges.”
