The temporary closure of a major Southside arterial road between Birmingham and Over the Mountain communities is expected to cause delays and detours for the next two weeks.

A portion of 26th Street South from Hatcher Place (the road between Virginia Samford Theatre and Caldwell Park) to Highland Avenue South will be closed effective Monday, Feb. 23 and for the next 10 working days, weather permitting.

This will cause a significant bottleneck at the intersection between Niazuma Avenue and Highland Avenue.

If you travel down Pawnee Ave and Niazuma Ave. from Montclair Road and vice versa up 26th Street after The Nick toward Caldwell Park, expect to use 11th Ave South as an alternate route.

Detour signs will be posted to help guide traffic safely around the work area.

Why is a portion of the road closed?

The closure will enable construction crews to install new drainage infrastructure as part of ongoing drainage improvements at Caldwell Park and along 26th Street South in the Highland Park neighborhood.
