4 new businesses + 1 closure in Birmingham this week

It’s a new week in The Magic City, and that means a new roundup of businesses popping up across town. 

From a local bakery’s new brick-and-mortar to a vintage bridal shop in the works, here are four businesses that should be on your radar. Plus, one local business saying farewell.

1. Glow by Gabby | Homewood

Going to a wedding or event this Spring? Glow by Gabby, a locally-owned tanning salon, has expanded from its home on Morris Avenue with a new location in downtown Homewood.

Located next to Soho Retro, Glow by Gabby offers in-studio luxury spray tans as well as mobile availability.

2. Edolyn’s Pies | Glen Iris

Edolyn’s Pies has been around for about a decade, from pop-ups at local markets to a brief kiosk at Pizitz, but now you’ll be able to shop their tasty homemade cakes and pies at a new brick-and-mortar shop.

Located in Glen Iris near UAB, Edolyn’s Pies offers flavors like red velvet, lemon blueberry chess and German chocolate.

3. Estelle Amore | Hueytown

One of Hueytown’s oldest structures is getting a new lease on life, thanks to local entrepreneur Estelle Straate.

Over the next few months, Estelle and her team will transform the historic home into a charming, timeless storefront for her vintage wedding dress boutique, Estelle Amore.

Estelle has built her brand, Estelle Amore, into a one-stop shop for brides-to-be looking for an extraordinary vintage wedding dresses, featuring one-of-a-kind dresses from the 1980s all the way back to the 1940s.

4. Minnie’s Golf & Bar | Parkside

Grab those (mini) golf clubs, folks—a new entertainment destination is coming soon to Birmingham’s Parkside District. Set to open this winter in Urban Supply, Minnie’s Golf & Bar will feature two themed nine-hole mini-golf courses, a full-service bar and curated food options.

5. Maple Street Biscuit Co. | Homewood

Maple Street Biscuit Company in downtown Homewood has closed after six years in operation.

Located at 2801 18th Street South, the Cracker Barrel-owned breakfast joint was known for its original variations of biscuits.  

One of its most renowned menu items was “The Squawking Goat,” a biscuit with an all-natural and hand-breaded fried chicken breast, fried goat cheese medallion topped with house-made pepper jelly. The biscuit was featured on The Food Network’s show Guilty Pleasures
