Since awarding its first grants in 2011, the fund has distributed nearly $740,000 to companion animal organizations serving Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount and Walker counties.

The Remy Fund focuses on traditional companion animals—dogs, cats and horses—and the meaningful roles they play in our community. Grants are awarded to nonprofits that provide direct services benefiting both animals and their human companions.

Funding requests are considered for organizational support and for specific projects with clear goals and objectives.

Typical grants support:

  • Rescue, shelter + adoption programs
  • Spay/neuter services
  • Animal-assisted therapy programs involving dogs, cats + horses
  • Education and advocacy efforts promoting humane, dignified treatment of companion animals

Each applicant undergoes an in-depth review process, including virtual or in-person site visits, conducted by the Remy Fund Grant Committee.

2025 impact: $90,500 awarded

In 2025 alone, the Remy Fund awarded $90,500 in grants to organizations improving the lives of animals across Birmingham.

Among the recipients:

  • Alabama Spay/Neuter—$10k for the Remy SNIP program, providing low-cost spay/neuter surgeries to reduce unwanted animals.
  • Greater Birmingham Humane Society—$10k for Project Pet Safe, assisting pet owners facing financial hardship.
  • Kitty Kat Haven and Rescue—$10k to provide specialized veterinary care for ill cats.
  • Shelby Humane Society—$10k supporting spay/neuter surgeries through the Fix-a-Bull Program, plus food and supplies for participants.
  • Walker County Humane Society—$10k for expanded spay and neuter resources.
  • Hand in Paw, Inc.—$7,500 for the “Sit, Stay, Read!” program, helping struggling readers build confidence through animal-assisted education.

And many more organizations have benefited over the years—each one extending Remy’s legacy of compassion.
