The Arc of Central Alabama, which serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, will open the Alabama Neurodevelopment Center (ANC) this Friday, Feb. 20.

The new facility aims to support families who may have concerns about developmental delays and disabilities at any age.

“Across Alabama, families and individuals often wait months — sometimes years — for critical developmental evaluations. The Alabama Neurodevelopment Center was created to address this growing need and expand access to timely, high-quality care statewide.”

The center will integrate clinical care, doctoral training and applied research in order to:

  • Shorten waitlists
  • Expand the licensed doctoral workforce
  • Ensure individuals receive timely, accurate evaluations
  • Provide ongoing support

“By uniting these three components, the Alabama Neurodevelopment Center not only expands access to quality care but also strengthens the professional pipeline and advances research that drives improved outcomes for individuals and families across the state.”

ANC operates on the same campus as Arc of Central Alabama, located at 6001 Crestwood Boulevard in Birmingham.

Within 5 years, ANC has big goals to live up to, according to its website.

By the end of year one, the center hopes to:

  • Serve 500 individuals
  • Train 5 psychologists

In 2030, staff wants to increase those figures to:

  • Serve more than 1,000 individuals
  • Train 20 psychologists

Serving everyone

One factor that makes ANC stand out is how accessible it is to the general public.

It provides comprehensive psychological evaluations for anyone of all ages, including adults. Those evaluations can assessments of several different factors, including:

  • Cognitive
  • Social
  • Language
  • Motor skills
  • Daily living
  • Academic skills

A physician’s referral are not required for an evaluation, which consist of an initial appointment, at least one appointment to complete testing (averages 2-3 hours) then an appointment to discuss results and diagnoses.

To learn more, call or email ANC starting Friday, Feb. 20 for more details.
