If you haven’t made dinner plans for tonight, check out On a Bun. Get in line early enough, and you may even get a free meal!

Founded by Denise and Crystal Peterson in 2025, On a Bun is the mother-and-daughter duo’s second restaurant endeavor in downtown Birmingham. In 2014, the pair opened Yo’ Mama’s—a counter-serve spot offering Southern staples like chicken & waffles, burgers, and shrimp & grits—at 2328 Second Ave. North.

In 2025, Denise and Crystal moved Yo’ Mama’s to a new, larger location at 2024 4th Ave. N. Later that year, the duo opened their second restaurant–On a Bun—in the old Yo’ Mama’s space.

At On a Bun, every dish on the menu is served—you guessed it—on a bun. The joint offers seven bun-based meals, including:

  • The All-American burger, with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and American cheese on a Brioche bun.
  • The 4th Ave, with collard greens, mac n cheese and Cheddar cheese on a Brioche Bun.
  • The Southside, with P.O.E. sauce, coleslaw and Cheddar cheese on a Brioche Bun.

Although the restaurant is typically closed on Mondays (and open 5-9PM Tuesday through Saturday), Denise and Crystal decided to open On a Bun on Presidents’ Day to give back to the community. Here are the details:

  • On a Bun is giving away 200 FREE meals to customers on Monday, February 16, from 5PM to 8PM.
  • The free meal will consist of one burger (regular or cheeseburger), a bag of chips and a bottle of water.
  • To be eligible for a free meal, one must be present at the restaurant. One meal per person, first-come, first-served.

According to AL.com, On a Bun is also donating 100 meals to local organization Margins: Women Helping Black Women, to help feed homeless people in Birmingham.
