When I’m driving through winding Mountain Brook neighborhoods, I often gaze up at the beautiful homes and picture what they look like inside. How do these homeowners mix their personality into such classic spaces, and how would my green couch fit in? It turns out some of them have a little help to balance new trends with historic features.

We got an inside look at a couple of these homes and saw how they decorated their space with local experts at Ballard Designs. I even picked up a little design inspiration for my own apartment.

Elizabeth embraced patterns in her Mountain Brook home

Elizabeth McCarroll shopped at Ballard Designs in Atlanta, Georgia—the showroom, catalog, you name it.

When Elizabeth and her husband moved into their Mountain Brook home two years ago, she already had plans to use Ballard to help bring the space together.

To prove Ballard Designs really are the experts, they saw pictures of Elizabeth’s house and made suggestions that integrated her existing items with fresh new pieces.

Every bathroom in her house boasts bright and spunky wallpaper, and Ballard helped with color-coordinating towels and shower curtains.

Plus, when Elizabeth said she wanted to keep the beige couch in her living room, Ballard designer Anna-Kathryn worked around it—adding a rug, pillows and fabric to the chairs to bring everything together.

Felecia’s English Village home needed something new

Felecia Macdonnell moved to Birmingham five years ago to be closer to her son, daughter-in-law and three grandsons.

She fell in love with a home on Diaper Row near English Village, and the only thing missing was Ballard Designs’ touch.

“I shopped with Ballard when I lived in Jacksonville, Florida, so as soon as they opened in Birmingham, I was there.

She hit it off with designer Anna-Kathryn immediately, and the two got to work on reimagining the space.

“We started with my bedding and found fabrics I liked. I started adding things here and there… I mean, how could you not? One thing led to another, and now my whole house is Ballard.”

Now, Felecia’s home boasts Ballard in almost every room: Pink walls in the dining room with matching place mats and napkins, and bedding, throw pillows and lamps in her bedroom.

It wasn’t what Felecia was used to, but when she said she wanted a change of scenery, her designer listened.
