In a city like Birmingham that is bursting at the seams with artistic talent, there is always something to see.

Ahead of Valentine’s Day, here are eight shows — including some that only have just a few shows left — to put on your calendar, perfect for a date, an outing with friends or a solo theater evening.

ACTA Theater — Big Fish

  • When: Feb. 12-22
  • What to expect: “BIG FISH tells the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest…and then some! Edward’s incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him—most of all, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales. Overflowing with heart and humor, BIG FISH is an extraordinary musical that reminds us why we love going to the theatre—for an experience that’s richer, funnier and bigger than life itself.” — ACTA Theater

But when a RED SOCK suddenly appears in a pile of laundry, their routine is thrown into chaos! As emotions swirl and surprises unfold, Inky Blue begins to feel something unexpected—admiration for the Red Sock—much to Pale Blue’s dismay. Designed for ages 3 and up, this imaginative, music-filled performance playfully explores themes of difference, tolerance, and acceptance with humor, heart, and a splash of color.” — Birmingham Children’s Theatre
