Do you have plans to travel on I-59/20 in the next few months between Fairfield and Hueytown at night or in the early morning? Prepare for some slowdowns and delays.

Beginning this week, the two-mile section of the well-traveled interstate between mile post 116 to mile post 118 is slated for re-surfacing, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT).

ALDOT expects this I-59/20 project to take until summer to finish. Motorists should expect nightly lane closures from 7PM to 6AM, Sunday through Thursday nights during construction.

The good news? ALDOT says these improvements are a precursor to a larger plan to widen this stretch of I-59/20 to three lanes in both directions. In other words: More room to ease traffic congestion in the future.

Meanwhile, be sure to make plans to slow down and be careful traveling through the work zone.
