A new Southern LGBTQ dramedy made its debut on the Terrific New Theatre (TNT) stage Thursday, Feb. 5.

The play, “The Recipe Box,” is about a man whose life is upended when his husband leaves him for a younger man, also leaving his mother-in-law without a home or plan. “The Recipe Box” explores themes of loss, resilience and chosen family through humor interwoven with poignant storytelling.

Written and directed by Del Shores, best known for his work in theater, television and film, the play stars Emerson Collins as Rick Sprague. Shores and Collins have served as artists-in-residence at TNT throughout development and production, Broadway World Birmingham reports.

This isn’t Shores’ first foray at TNT. In 2003, he performed his 1996 play “Sordid Lives” at the theater. TNT has continued to produce his works, which include:

  • “Southern Baptist Sissies”
  • “Daddy’s Dyin'”
  • “Who’s Got the Will?”

“Directing my new play ‘The Recipe Box’ at Terrific New Theatre has been thrilling, especially after a decades-long love affair with this remarkable company and Birmingham. This experience ranks among the very best of my career. Opening night was electric — hearing the laughter and the quiet sniffles, and watching four extraordinary actors bring my play to life was magical.”

Alongside Collins, the cast of “The Recipe Box” world premiere includes:

  • Cari Gisler Oliver as Lou Wanda Bailiss
  • Sherwanna Wheeler as Oona La Veck
  • Isaiah Nicholas Pierce as Joah Bailiss
