Savage’s Bakery has moved up its closing date to Saturday, February 7th.

Earlier this week the beloved bakery in downtown Homewood announced it was closing on Valentine’s Day.

In an Instagram post this afternoon the 87 year old Birmingham institution said it is shutting down a week early.

Founded in 1939 by William Savage, Savage’s was originally located in the Highland Plaza shopping center in Birmingham’s Southside; the aging shopping center was demolished in 2023

In the 1950s, Savage’s moved from Southside to its current location in Homewood.

Located at 2916 18th Street South, the family-owned and operated bakery quickly became a downtown staple.

Savage’s is well known for its wide array of tasty treats—Meltaways, Smiley Face Cookies, Gingerbread Men, Butterflake Rolls and cakes.

After the Friday afternoon post, customers flocked to Homewood to say their goodbyes.
