If you tuned into the 68th Grammy Awards last Sunday, you probably saw a few recognizable names and artists, but in case you missed it: Homewood local Mitch Prewitt took the stage, too!

Homewood High School alum performed at the Grammys

Mitch Prewitt graduated from Homewood High School in 2021, where he was a percussion section leader in the Patriot Band, according to Homewood’s student publication, the Homewood Tricorne.

Now, Prewitt is the drummer for Sombr, the indie rock artist and Best New Artist nominee. The two met at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.

The Grammys performance was not Prewitt’s first time on the big stage, though. In addition to an international tour, he’s also played alongside Sombr on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Saturday Night Live and the Video Music Awards (all within the past year!)

Prewitt told the Homewood Tricorne that his love for music started young—at three years old, to be exact. One thing led to another and Prewitt:

  • Joined the Patriot Band
  • Became percussion section leader
  • Moved to Nashville + learned more through recording studios
  • Started school at NYU where he met Sombr
  • Embarked on a sold-out international tour
  • Performed on some of the world’s most popular stages

The story’s not over for Prewitt! Birmingham is full of incredible talent, but we don’t have to be the ones to tell you that.
